Runtime

Xephr® runtime is operated through the user's web browser.  Xephr entities are generated when the user clicks on a link that accesses the entity.  There are six kinds of entities that can be generated, and the data displayed in the entity may or may not come from a database, depending on the entity's definition.

Navigation throughout Xephr runtime is performed through a series of links on the entities.  Links in Xephr can run perform a variety of actions, including but not limited to, running another entity, performing a save or delete against the database record, and access a web page on the internet.  When clicking on a link in Xephr, the status bar in the browser will display the actual HREF of the link.

Menus are displayed as a collection of links on an entity.  There are two types.  The first is entity-specific and entity-defined.  These links are defined by entity and may perform different actions according to the data on the entity.  The second is a set of menu objects defined in the Xephr Studio that is the same each time it is accessed.  These menus are screen entities with blocks that reference the menu objects in the Xephr Studio.   On the menu screen, these objects are displayed as links, that when clicked on, run specific entities or rerun the menu screen with a new set of menu links.

Runtime Requirements

The NDS Xephr product allows you to securely interact with back end databases. This secure communications facility is provided in part by a small, signed Java applet authenticated by Thawte. In addition the applet enhances the Xephr web page capability by providing popup calendar, calculator and value picker capabilities.

In order to use the applet, your browser must have a Java Virtual Machine installed. Some browsers install the JVM as a matter of course, however, the newer Microsoft browsers do not have one included in their default install.

The Download Java link will included on all login pages and on the Detecting Browser Capabilities page will install the SUN JVM. For more information on authentication by Thawte, click here.
