Blocks are subsidiary objects to entities, and may or may not reference a database table or view. Blocks are added to entities and their templates. When adding blocks, users have the option of creating them from database tables or creating them manually.
Most blocks that are added to templates will be headers, footers, and menus.
Menus on entities are simply blocks with a list of link fields.
It is important to note that blocks do not need to be named uniquely because you can have the same block on an entity for different modes, so it is important that the user is aware of this to prevent conflicts between like-named blocks.
