What is ERP?
ERP stands for Enterprise Resource Planning and is an information system by which a company
integrates all of its business processes into a single database, including, but not limited to, financials,
supply chain management, customer relationship management, manufacturing, and distribution. ERP's
main goal is to integrate data and processes from all areas of an organization and unify it for easy access
and work flow.
The term ERP is most commonly used to describe software that can manage all of these processes, and
an ERP software solution is the glue that holds together a large organization, increasing communication
and the sharing of information throughout the entire company. Because all of the data necessary for
running the business is stored in the same database, the information is reliable, accurate, and accessible
in real-time. For example, when an item is purchased and received into inventory, the manufacturing
department is able to immediately see the receipt and use that inventory for the work orders that are waiting
for it.
In the past, ERP systems were used in larger, more industrial types of companies. However, the use of
ERP has changed to be extremely comprehensive. Today, the term can refer to any type of company, no
matter what industry it falls in. In fact, ERP systems are now used in almost any type of organization –
large or small.
